 Juan Carlos Yepes Ocampo, profesor del Departamento de Jurídicas y Miembro del Consejo Superior de la Universidad de Caldas, realizó un reconocimiento a Héctor Guillermo Sarmiento estrada, fotógrafo de la Oficina de Prensa de la Institución, por su loable labor y permanencia en la Institución.

 “Son  31 años dedicados a la noble tarea de construir memoria desde las cerca de mil 800 fotografías guardadas como un tesoro en 17 álbumes, lugar privilegiado de la memoria universitaria, construida a partir de los registros de una lente experta que se vuelve testimonio de la trayectoria patrimonial del principal ente académico de la región”, así describe Yepes Ocampo la labor del fotógrafo. 

A continuación compartimos la semblanza que realizó el docente de la Universidad como homenaje a Sarmiento Estrada. 

La memoria histórica institucional. Un aporte significativo desde la fotografía.

Semblanza de Guillermo Sarmiento 

Muchos de los que hacemos parte de la vida institucional de la Universidad de Caldas y de manera especial quienes hemos podido registrar su historia desde 1984, año en que ingresa Guillermo Sarmiento Estrada como fotógrafo a la institución, hemos sido testigos excepcionales del cubrimiento permanente que ha llevado a cabo éste importante servidor público sobre los acontecimientos que marcan el día a día de la Universidad. Son  31 años dedicados a la noble tarea de construir memoria desde las cerca de 1.800 fotografías guardadas como un tesoro en 17 álbumes, lugar privilegiado de la memoria universitaria, construida a partir de los registros de una lente experta que se vuelve testimonio de la trayectoria patrimonial del principal ente académico de la región. 

En una ocasión le pregunté a Guillermo qué significaba su labor para la Universidad, ante lo cual respondió de la manera más natural y desprendida que su trabajo era una “expresión de la universidad en imágenes, un testimonio de su vigencia”. Nada mejor para dar cuenta del revelador aporte que este funcionario le ha dado a la Universidad de Caldas que referir su idea sobre la misión que cumple. La memoria no sólo se construye a través de la ciencia, la tecnología, la literatura, la poesía, el arte y la cultura, también se hace desde la labor “invisible” de quien hace visible y para la posteridad cada acontecimiento de la vida institucional. 

Guillermo es hijo del fallecido fotógrafo del Diario “La Patria”, maestro Carlos Sarmiento Segovia, quien estuvo a cargo de los principales registros fotográficos de hechos que marcaron la historia de la ciudad de Manizales entre 1957 y 2013, año en el cual vio deteriorada su salud y tuvo que prescindir, a mucho pesar, de la actividad que fue su vida misma. En su hijo Guillermo encontró don Carlos no sólo la prolongación de su existencia como ser humano sino la simiente de esa “camada” de fotógrafos que extenderían en el tiempo, y contra todo pronóstico, su hermoso arte. Porque sin lugar a dudas los fotógrafos de la “vieja pucha”  ya no suelen encontrarse con la misma frecuencia en la ciudad. 

Todavía vemos a algunos de ellos en las ceremonias de grados tratando de resistir los embates de la tecnología, expresada en cámaras digitales, tablets, celulares de última generación y demás dispositivos que han hecho desaparecer paulatinamente los últimos vestigios de la fotografía tradicional. 

Los sentimientos de Guillermo afloran cuando se le interroga por su sitio en la Universidad, por el lugar que ocupa; responde simplemente que se debe a ella y por ella profesa el más auténtico “sentido de pertenencia”, en síntesis, “amor”. Un amor de esos que la mayoría no sólo profesamos sino que materializamos con acciones en su defensa y lucha por preservarla de los influjos nocivos de quienes han erosionado su esencia y condición. 

Sólo amor y compromiso podemos entrañar quienes nos hemos realizado como seres humanos y profesionales en la Universidad de Caldas. En los ocho años que le restan como funcionario al servicio de la institución, Guillermo promete honrar su cargo culminando con entrega y actitud tesonera la misión que acogió con aprecio desde la mitad de la década de los 80. 

Indudablemente la fotografía es memoria para saber lo que hemos sido, para confrontarnos con lo que hoy somos y para pensar de mejor manera lo que aspiramos ser en el futuro. El álbum de la memoria institucional -registrada por Sarmiento- recoge locaciones, personajes, exposiciones, eventos académicos, científicos, artísticos y, en fin, la inagotable fuente del trayecto institucional hecho imagen. 

Una fotografía resulta importante por constituir lenguaje estético de la realidad, por aportar valor documental y testimonial a la memoria de las instituciones, más allá de su potencial comunicacional, porque el arraigo y anclaje de los valores también puede transmitirse desde los registros fotográficos, desde su carga simbólica visual, desde su dimensión política, desde lo que Guillermo denomina expresión en imágenes y vigencia del contenido existencial de las instituciones. 

Identidad, memoria y patrimonio hacen ejemplar simbiosis para redescubrir el pasado y recrear imaginarios colectivos que perpetúen la esencia de la Universidad. La evocación y la nostalgia se conjugan en el recuerdo de lo que hemos sido y nos ubican en lo que estamos siendo. 

¿Qué recuerdos dejaremos para el arraigo y el anclaje de los que vendrán después de nosotros a construir el futuro de la Universidad? Esta es una pregunta compleja, pero ineludible para quienes hemos considerado importante forjar la universidad desde el trasegar de sus avatares. 

El despliegue vital  en la Universidad necesariamente debe superar la rutina del academicismo, ese que a ultranza desnaturaliza y enajena, el mismo que hace perder la perspectiva solidaria para acompañar a aquellos que combaten por un país mejor, forjado desde la educación superior de calidad e incluyente, asumida como un derecho y no como un bien transable. 

Los reencuentros con la memoria visual de la fotografía remiten a lo que desde 1943 hizo posible la creación de la Universidad de Caldas, y Guillermo Sarmiento ha contribuido a esa historia a través de la consolidación del archivo fotográfico que nos acerca al pasado, no para añorarlo como tiempo mejor, sino para superarlo y no ser inferiores a las grandes gestas de quienes hicieron posible lo que hoy somos. 

Pero no nos llamemos a engaño, también es menester reorientar caminos que equivocadamente se han trazado a partir de intereses que no coinciden con la misión de la Universidad en la sociedad. A ello también  nos invita la memoria de la fotografía. 

La ciencia básica y sus aportes, la ciencia social y sus contribuciones, el arte y su valor agregado han sido registrados día a día por Guillermo. A él mi más enorme gratitud y deseos porque continúe haciendo universidad desde su quehacer. 

Su acervo fotográfico es testigo fiel del paso de la historia universitaria en sus últimas décadas, y allí, en sus álbumes, se encuentra la memoria que día a día hemos construido y espera ser construida por siempre. Porque todo registro fotográfico es una extensión de la realidad, una realidad que exige transformarse en favor de la vida para asistir a universos estéticos diferentes, aquellos que efectivamente nos hagan más humanos. 

Todas las fotografías muestran una historia. Hagamos que la historia de nosotros se muestre, con la ayuda invaluable de Guillermo, como una herencia de lucha por preservar el patrimonio público de los caldenses y el país.
